Welcome to the Otherweb - an unsafe space where we discuss the internet, the media, and the information ecosystem in all its flawed glory. The internet is saturated with low-quality information. Most of what people consume - on social media, in search engines, and even in the news - is the informational equivalent of junk food. We are constantly bombarded with superficial, trivial, and often false information because it generates clicks and views, and publishers have little incentive to optimize for anything other than clicks and views. The result is that many people have the illusion of knowledge, while in reality, their head is often clogged with some clickbait article they read yesterday. This is why we decided to build the Otherweb. And this is why we decided to start this podcast - to speak with the smartest people we can find and figure out, together, what the Otherweb needs to look like. Imagine we had an internet without clickbait, eye catchers, autoplaying videos, paywalls, partisan eco-chambers, or whatever else digital marketers can come up with next? A place where you are the consumer and not the product?
